How to Use Android Digital Wellbeing for App Limits and Focus Mode
Between family messages and everyday browsing, you may want more say over when you use certain apps. Android Digital Wellbeing offers a practical starting point: review your app use, set a timer, or pause selected apps with Focus mode. You do not need to change everything at once.
This guide follows Google’s Digital Wellbeing instructions. Availability and steps can vary by device, so the options on your phone may look a little different.
Start by Checking Your App Use
Open Settings and tap Digital Wellbeing. The first time you open it, Google says you will need to set up a profile. To manage your data, the listed path is Settings > Digital Wellbeing > More > Manage your data.
Digital Wellbeing’s chart can show:
- Screen time: how long you have used apps.
- Times opened: how often you have unlocked your phone and opened certain apps.
- Notifications received: how many notifications apps have sent.
Tap a listed app to see more information or its settings. Use this as a starting point, not a scorecard: choose one app whose use you would like to manage differently.
If you want easier access to Digital Wellbeing, open Settings, tap Digital Wellbeing, and turn on Show icon in the app list.
Set an App Timer for a Daily Limit
An app timer lets you set a daily time allowance for an app. Google gives this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing, then App timers.
- Choose the app and set its timer.
When the time runs out, the app closes and its icon dims. Timers reset at midnight. If you want to use the app again before then, you can delete its timer.
For a manageable first step, try a timer on one app rather than setting several limits at once. Choose an allowance that fits how you intend to use that app. Some work and school accounts might not work with app timers.
Want to Limit a Website Instead?
For Chrome on Android, Digital Wellbeing can show the websites you have visited and the time spent on them each day. Google also describes a site timer option for individual websites. This is an option to consider when you want to limit one site rather than your use of Chrome as a whole.
Use Focus Mode to Pause Selected Apps
Focus mode works differently from a daily timer. You choose which apps to pause. While Focus mode is on, you cannot use those apps and will not receive notifications from them.
- Open Digital Wellbeing in Settings and select Focus mode.
- Choose the apps you want to pause.
- Turn Focus mode on when you want the pause to begin, or set a schedule.
For example, you could choose to pause a game or social app during a family activity, while leaving apps you have not selected outside that pause. Check your selection before switching it on so it matches what you want available.
You can turn Focus mode off when needed. You can also choose Take a break to interrupt it temporarily for a selected time limit. On some devices, you can add Focus mode to Quick Settings.
Choose the Tool That Matches Your Goal
- To understand your current use, start with the app-use chart.
- To set a daily allowance for an app, use an app timer.
- To limit a particular website in Chrome, consider a site timer.
- To pause selected apps and their notifications for a period, use Focus mode.
Keep Your First Change Small
You can begin with one app and one decision: review its use, give it a daily limit, or pause it during a chosen period. These settings give you specific controls over app access and selected notifications; they are not a promise of better attention or productivity. Choose the option that fits your day, then adjust it if your needs change.
