How to Stay Positive This Festive Season

The festive period is a time for connecting with loved ones and for taking some well-deserved time off to unwind. Sadly, with a global pandemic in our midst, it’s looking a bit different for many people this year. For some, perhaps the usual big family get togethers have been replaced by a more lowkey affair – but this doesn’t mean it can’t still be a time of joy.

According to a recent survey, 84% of the UK predicted Christmas would be different for them this year – but let’s make this a good thing! Here are a few ways to stay positive, so you can enter 2021 on a good note.

Connect with others

Sharing a feast with all your loves ones could be off the cards, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still connect with them over this period. Thanks to the numerous video chat programmes available, you could host a virtual get together! Whether it’s a quick catch up or an afternoon of games, seeing your loved ones’ faces is sure to lighten your mood. If that’s not possible, checking in with others via text or a phone call could help you feel more connected.

Enjoy some downtime

While big family Christmases and lots of socialising can be great fun, it can be incredibly exhausting too! If you’ve downsized your plans this year, embrace this time of relaxation. After a year of hardship, everyone is due some well-deserved R&R. Cuddling up in front of the TV could be just what you need to start the new year feeling rejuvenated.

Go for a winter walk

With social distancing and lockdown restrictions limiting what we can do this year, a walk is something we can enjoy safely. So, if you’re suffering from cabin fever – or even if you’re not – step outside for a stroll and enjoy a bit of fresh air. You’d be amazed how even a quick 20-minute walk can boost your mood – especially if you find somewhere that you can connect with nature.

Take a break from social media

There are plenty of benefits of social media, but it can have a negative impact on you mentally if you find yourself comparing your life to those of the people you follow. This is particularly the case at this time of year, when social media feeds can become full of pictures of festivities, gifts and engagement rings. By switching off for a few days, you can enter the new year happy with your life as it is, without the pressure of making it live up to other people’s.

Set new year’s resolutions

We’ve got a brand-new year to look forward to, so it’s time to start looking to the future. Don’t let the events of 2020 get you down. By setting yourself goals and dreams of what you want to achieve in 2021, it will instantly have you feeling excited and optimistic about what lies ahead.

Hopefully with these tips, you can maintain a positive attitude and keep any gloomy feelings at bay. Let’s get the year started on the right note, with a smile on our faces!
